About The Wicked Problems in Medical Education Conference
This international conference is a forum for educators, researchers, and program leaders who are keen to expand their repertoire of systematic inquiries (also referred to research approaches).
While these methodologies can be applied to all types of problem, we will focus on one particular complex problem in medical education that is challenging or impossible to solve: the wicked problem of implementing competency-based medical education.
Conference faculty are internationally recognized experts within their respective approach to systematic inquiry—evidence synthesis, qualitative research, educational design research and big data in medical education—and are affiliated with international organizations such as Best Evidence in Medical Education (BEME), the Competency-Based Time Variable Medical Education Consortium, and the School of Health Education at Maastricht University. Conference attendees will network with faculty and other attendees to learn from one another via symposia, intensive courses, and small group sessions. By the end of the conference, attendees will be able to formulate plans to systematically study wicked problems such as competency-based education at their own institutions.
Goals of the conference leaders:
- Present diverse yet complementary approaches to medical education research in the complex space of healthcare
- Create networks of scholars within the region and beyond
Guiding Principles for conference planning:
- We value Community. Thus, we will work to create a psychologically safe forum where all participants learn from one another through respectful conversations.
- We value Candor. Thus, we will facilitate evidence-informed and engaging conversations about issues that matter to participants.
- We value Equity. Thus, we promote non-hierarchical, asset-based education where teaching and learning are joint endeavors and a shared expectation.
